Board books for babies: what happens when you read from 3 months

A baby who is read to from the first months hears far more words than conversation alone provides, and hears them paired with a picture, a pointing finger and your voice. Between three and six months that mostly looks like staring: a bold fruit on a plain page holds attention for a few seconds, then a little longer each week. Around six months the hands join in. The book gets grabbed, mouthed and dropped, which is exactly why the pages are thick board. By ten to twelve months pointing arrives, and every point is an invitation to name the picture.
