Which play gym attachments to hang, and when

You lay your six week old on the mat under the play gym. She stares at the ceiling fan. You wave the rattle that came with the set. She keeps staring at the fan. Ten minutes later she is crying, and you are wondering why a fan beats a toy you paid for.
Here is the answer, and it is the rule this post runs on: at six weeks a baby chases movement and contrast, and a ceiling fan has both. Whatever hangs above her has to move slowly or be bold black and white. Get that right and the gym stops being furniture.
A gym frame is a bar. The attachments are where the development happens, and they change every three months. Here is what to hang and when, on any gym, cot bar or rod you already own. Everything in our play gym attachments range hangs from a cord or a loop.
Baby play gym: what it is and what does the real work
A baby play gym is a bar or an arch that holds toys above a baby lying on her back or tummy. That is all the frame does: it holds things at a height she can see and later reach.
Which means the frame is the easy part of the decision and the attachments are the real one, and most parents get that backwards. A gym with the wrong toys becomes a laundry rack by month two. The same frame with the right three pieces gets used daily for a year.
Play gym for newborn: what to hang in the first three months
In the first twelve weeks your baby's eyes are learning two skills: focusing at a fixed distance, and following something as it moves. She sees best at about 20 to 30 cm, roughly chest to face while feeding, and bold black and white reads clearly before colour does.
So a newborn gym is a looking gym. It holds two things.
Something that moves slowly. Our spiral hanging mobile turns gently in still air, which gives new eyes a reason to track from one side to the other. It is dual-sided: bold on one side for the early weeks, coloured on the other for later. Hang it above the changing area too, because a baby watching something turn forgets to protest.
Something bold to stare at. Prop a high-contrast card against the gym leg, about 20 to 30 cm from her face. Our high-contrast flashcards with mirror are 16 double-sided cards, 8 simple patterns and 8 complex, so you step up the difficulty as her focus improves.
The whole newborn setup: two pieces, short sessions, you sitting close.
Hanging toys for a 3 months baby: reach, bat and grasp
Around three months the arms join in. Your baby on her back starts swiping at whatever hangs over her, and that swipe is the beginning of hand-eye coordination. She learns the loop that matters most this year: I moved my arm, something happened, I can do it again.
To teach that loop, height is everything. Hang our hanging balls so the lowest one sits exactly where a stretched arm meets it and the others are further away. She bats the low one, hears it clink, watches it swing back, and tries again. Over the next weeks her reach climbs up the cords. The balls are natural wood with baby-safe paint on cotton string, for 2 to 12 months, so one set covers the whole reaching year.
Hang a ribbon beside it. Our rainbow ribbon teether is a beech wood ring with seven rainbow ribbons, and ribbons are the easiest thing in the world for a three month old fist to catch. Once caught it heads for the mouth, which is where sore gums want it. It works from 2 months to 3 years, held or hung on a cot or gym.
Newborn gym at 6 to 12 months: the floor takes over
By six months two things happen together. The swipe becomes a real grasp, and everything grasped goes into the mouth, because teething has started.
Now the attachments come off the bar and become handheld toys. Our neem wood teether set earns its place here: four shapes in solid neem, BIS certified, with a wide 4.5 cm grip hole, for 3 to 18 months. Hang one from the bar for her to pull down, keep the rest in a floor basket.
Raise the hanging balls so a sitting baby stretches up. Move the cards to the floor for peekaboo. Add something that rolls away, like our rolling drum rattle, a neem wood drum with coloured balls inside that rattles when shaken and rolls off when pushed. Chasing a toy is what gets most babies crawling.
Play gym for 1 year old: what still earns its place
Parents searching for a play gym for a 1 year old usually own a frame already and want to know what is worth hanging on it now.
At a year the frame becomes a pull-up bar and the attachments become loose toys. Raise the balls so a standing baby reaches up. Keep the teethers and the ribbon ring in a basket she can raid herself. The cards turn into naming games: point, say the word, wait for her to look. After that she is ready for stacking, nesting and first puzzles, and the gym hands over to those.
How to choose play gym attachments: height, size and material
Three checks, in this order.
- Height first. Hang every toy so your baby touches it with a stretch. Too high and she gives up; at chest level she bats it by accident and learns little about her own aim. Keep cords short so nothing loops near the face or neck, and check each knot before every session.
- Size next. Anything that reaches the mouth should be wider than her fist, hanging or otherwise.
- Material last. Raw or oil-finished hardwood for anything chewed, water-based paint on anything coloured, cotton cord, and thick board for cards so they wipe clean. Wooden pieces like a damp-cloth wipe and a full air-dry.
The rule that outranks all three: stay within arm's reach whenever the gym is up, and take it down when you step away.
The attachments I hang, in order
Everything below is in our play gym attachments range, listed in the order I would buy them.
- Spiral hanging mobile, 0 to 6 months. Dual-sided natural birch wood with baby-safe colours, made in India. Turns slowly enough for new eyes to follow.
- High-contrast flashcards with mirror, 0 to 6 months. 16 double-sided cards, 8 simple and 8 complex, plus a baby-safe mirror, a play guide and a storage box, on 350 GSM board with non-toxic printing.
- Hanging balls at graded heights, 2 to 12 months. Wooden balls on cords of different lengths, in natural wood with baby-safe paints and cotton string. They clink when hit, so every swipe gets an answer.
- Rainbow ribbon teether, 2 months to 3 years. Beech wood ring with seven ribbons to grip and pull, cool on sore gums. Hangs on a gym or cot as easily as it sits in a hand.
- Neem wood teether set, 3 to 18 months. Four hand-carved neem shapes with a wide 4.5 cm grip hole, light enough to pass hand to hand. BIS certified, left natural.
- High-contrast jungle cloth book, 0 to 12 months. Bold black and white jungle pages, crinkle sheets inside and a neem wood teether ring attached, in baby-safe soft fabric and BIS certified materials. Stand it open on the mat for tummy time.
For a newborn gift, the mobile and ribbon teether travel well and get used from day one. See the baby teethers range for the pieces that come off the bar at six months.
Play gym questions parents ask
When can a baby start using a play gym?
From the first weeks, in short sessions on her back, with one slow-moving mobile to watch and a bold card propped in view. Add hanging toys to bat at two to three months, and teethers once mouthing starts, usually around three months.
Do I need to buy a gym frame at all?
Any bar over a lying baby works: a cot bar, a pram hood, a dupatta tied between two chair backs, a curtain rod over a floor mat. Every attachment here ties on with a cord or a loop, so start with the toys and use the frame you have.
Which hanging toys suit a 3 month old?
Balls hung at graded heights and a ribbon teether. At three months she swipes before she grasps, so she wants something that swings back and makes a sound when her arm connects. Set the lowest ball where a stretched arm reaches it, and raise it as her aim improves.
Which attachment helps with tummy time?
The high-contrast cards and the mirror. Prop a card 20 to 30 cm in front of her face and swap it when her interest fades. The mirror is the reward for lifting her head, because a face, even her own, is the most interesting thing in the room. The cloth book works the same way.
Is wood safe for a teething baby to chew?
Dense, fine-grained hardwood with a raw or oil finish is the traditional teether in Indian homes, and our neem pieces are BIS certified. Wipe with a damp cloth, air-dry fully, keep them away from soaking and boiling, and retire any piece that cracks.
