Where did it go? — There it is!

Where did it go? — There it is!

Around 8 or 9 months, your little one makes one of the biggest discoveries of their life — things still exist when out of sight. This Montessori drop-and-catch box turns that quiet developmental leap into a game your baby will play again and again.

What your child gains

Hand-eye coordination

Hand-eye coordination

Aligning a 5.3 cm ball over a 5.8 cm hole trains visually guided release — real motor work for a 9-month-old.

Object permanence

Object permanence

The textbook Montessori material for the Piaget Stage-4 → Stage-5 transition. Out of sight stops meaning gone.

Visual tracking

Visual tracking

Eyes follow the ball top → chamber → arch → tray. Linear pursuit across a short, satisfying distance.

Predictive joy

Predictive joy

By 12 months your baby looks at the tray BEFORE the ball reappears — the first flicker of anticipation.

Real wood. Real finish. Real safety math.

Real wood. Real finish. Real safety math.

One continuous wooden assembly: tall drop chamber + open catch tray + a bright yellow internal baffle with an arched portal that guides every ball back into view. Built from multi-laminate birch plywood with a mineral-oil sealed body; solid hardwood balls finished with water-based, lead-free paint. Ball diameter is ~5.3 cm — well above the 32 mm small-parts choke gauge.

How to play

Place

Place

One ball, one hole, one hand. Sit beside your little one and let them hold the ball above the hole.

Drop

Drop

The ball disappears through the round hole into the chamber. Where did it go?

Reappear

Reappear

The ball rolls under the bright yellow arched portal and back into the open catch tray. There it is!

Reach

Reach

Baby picks the ball back up — palmar grasp at 8m, pincer grasp at 12m.

Repeat

Repeat

The same drop, 30, 50, 100 times across a week. Repetition is how the concept lands.

A win for everyone

Designed for your baby

Designed for your baby

Object permanence is forming in the 8–14 month window. This simple wooden loop — drop, disappear, reappear — gives your baby 10–20 minutes of absorbed independent play, exactly when their brain is asking for it.

Built for you, too

Built for you, too

10–20 minutes for a hot coffee · a quiet phone call · a deep breath. While your little one drops, retrieves, and repeats, you get a small moment of your own back. Heirloom-grade birch plywood — a Montessori gift that lasts well past the first birthday.

Questions parents ask

Is the paint and wood safe for a baby who puts things in their mouth?
Yes. The 3 wooden balls use water-based, lead-free paint. The plywood body is sealed with a food-safe mineral-oil rub. We do not recommend sustained chewing — the toy is built for dropping, not teething.
Are the balls a choking hazard?
No. Each ball is ~5.3 cm (53 mm) in diameter, well above the 32 mm small-parts choke gauge for ages 3 and under. Designed for ages 6 months and up with adult supervision.
Can the ball get stuck inside the box?
No. The drop hole is ~5.8 cm and the arched portal in the yellow baffle is ~6.5 cm — both wider than the ball. Gravity rolls every ball through the chamber and out into the catch tray.
What age is this really for?
Designed for 6–24 months. The sweet spot is 8–14 months — the developmental window when object permanence is forming. Many parents tell us their child returns to it well past 18 months.
How long will my child use this?
Designed for the 6–24 month window — that's roughly 18 months of active developmental play. Repetition is the magic; this is the kind of toy that gets used 50 times across a single week.
Everything you need. Nothing you don't.
